  • Abstraction Gallery

    Jan 1, 2021 - Jun 1, 2025

Abstract Expressionism, the first truly American art movement, emerged in the early 1940s in New York’s Greenwich Village. Defying standards, a group of artists moved away from depictions of people and nature towards expressive, less recognizable forms.

Abstract Expressionism is a major movement in Modern Art, correlating also to abstraction and non-representational art in general. It emphasized the depiction of emotions rather than objects. Abstractionists favored large canvases, dramatic colors, and loose brushwork. They sought to portray paint texture and the movement of the artist’s hand. The act of creating was considered as important as the finished product itself. Emphasizing its independence from European trends, Abstract Expressionism was the first American school to influence artists overseas rather than vice versa.

  • Through Artists’ Eyes: Exploring the Natural and Urban World

    Sep 7, 2023 - Jul 1, 2026

Drawn primarily from CAM’s permanent collection, Through Artists’ Eyes: Exploring the Natural and Urban World,  features a diverse range of artists’ work that offers insights into our shared human experiences. Each section offers differing perspectives on the idyllic beauty of natural landscapes, the symbiotic relationship between humans and animals, the grandeur of Niagara Falls, the complexity of urban environments, and the individuality of people. The themes demonstrate artists’ ability to explore their own unique viewpoints, inviting viewers to contemplate common subjects in new ways. This exhibition elevates lesser-known creators, who have been historically overlooked, alongside artists who have gained national acclaim. The gallery presents a variety of modern and contemporary pieces that share diverse artistic viewpoints and provides a space for personal reflection.

EXHIBITION PROPOSALS

With learning and public access at the heart of its mission, the Castellani Art Museum (CAM) welcomes exhibition proposals from individual artists, artist groups, and independent curators. The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University connects diverse audiences to art by inspiring creativity and learning within the campus community and beyond.

Innovative and collaborative exhibitions can enhance the awareness of the CAM as a civic resource, platform for exploring issues, and offer opportunities for transformative thinking within visitors of all ages and demographics. Artists, curators, and organizations are encouraged to submit.

Exhibition proposals should address or reflect on at least one of the following topics:

  • Unique Artistic Expression

  • Current Events

  • Social Commentary

  • Cultural Diversity of Artist(s)

  • Issues of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility

  • Regional Artist Themes (Western New York/Niagara Falls)

  • Inspiration or dialogue with the CAM’s permanent collection

Submission can also connect to current events or programs highlighted in our University and Western New York communities. The CAM also welcomes proposals that offer innovative use of the museum’s outdoor front portico area and/or utilize and enhance our sculpture grounds. Proposals with traditional and non-traditional artistic media are accepted.

The CAM presents, on average, 8-12 exhibitions annually, which include student, faculty, and staff-curated explorations of the CAM collection, as well as temporary exhibitions of outside artists. Particular attention is given to the balance between the presentation of our outstanding permanent collection, supporting local folk artists, and highlighting national artistic interests throughout our nine dynamic gallery spaces, portico, and outdoor sculpture grounds.
